Maybelline Color Tattoo Review – best drugstore cream eye shadow
Maybelline NY came up with an innovative and super affordable product for makeup lovers everywhere, whether they are makeup artists or just discovering their passion for makeup. Maybelline Color Tattoo is the best drugstore cream eye shadow on the market right now and in my opinion, they surpass some very popular high-end brands. You have to hear about them and then go buy some!
Maybelline Color Tattoo pots are the best performing cream eyeshadow I’ve ever tried from a budget brand, and they’re super versatile to have in your kit. You can use them as an eye primer, to intensify your powder eye shadows or loose pigments, as a waterproof eyeliner, as an intensely pigmented eye shadow or even as a highlighter, on the high points of your face, inner corners of the eyes and brow bones.
The colors are bright, pigmented and vibrant, they do not require a base or a primer, they blend easily, set quickly and don’t crease for up to 24h. The Color Tattoos are buildable, so they can take you from a fresh, natural wash of sweet nudes to intense, colorful, summer appropriate looks.
Maybelline Color Tattoo – the permanent shade range
The shades available in the permanent range are different from what you might expect. Apart from a taupe and a gray (available in the US) and a pink gold (available in Romania) the Maybelline Color Tattoo line features a bright matte orange, an intense burgundy plum, a vivid turquoise and an aqua teal, gold, silver and a very popular bronze shade. The best shades are those with less shimmery finishes, as these blend more easily and are smoother.
Here is a complete list of the shades available in the permanent Maybelline Color Tattoo range:
- Too Cool – metallic white
- Fierce and Tangy – bright orange with a satiny finish and golden particles ( that intensify the shade, which otherwise looks matte on the lid)
- Audacious Asphalt – dark silver with metallic finish
- Painted Purple – bright medium purple with shimmer
- Bad to the Bronze – bronze with metallic finish and sheen
- Pomegranate Punk – plum with a shimmery finish
- Tough as Taupe – mauve gray with neutral-cool undertones
- Tenacious Teal – aqua blue with silver shimmer
- Bold Gold – medium-dark gold
- Edgy Emerald – emerald green with a shimmery finish
In Romania, you can find 4 shade in the nude & metallic collection – On and On Bronze (similar to Bad to the Bronze), Permanent Taupe (similar to Tough as Taupe), Eternal Silver (a bright gorgeous silver shade) and Timeless Black (a good eyeliner/ Smokey Eye shadow).
The range also features 4 vivid shades – Eternal Gold (similar to Bold Gold), Turquoise Forever (Tenacious Teal), Endless Purple (Painted Purple) and Pink Gold (a splendid luminous shade).
Texture & Application
Maybelline Color Tattoo has a creamy texture and a smooth, easily blendable formula. It does not require an eye shadow base and it won’t crease. The formula is so good, that even worn alone, without a base or a powder eye shadow on top, it won’t budge, fade or smudge.
Compared to other cream eye shadows, it’s equally pigmented and intense, yet smoother and far more easy to blend. You have plenty of time to apply it – in one or several layers – as well as blend the edges before the product sets for a good 16 to 24h.
These can also be used as an eyeshadow base or as an eyeliner and they work and perform quite well. It’s always nice when a product is multitasking and maintains its properties despite the way you choose to use them.
Though some shades are smoother than others due to the finish (the more shimmery ones are less smooth, while the more matte ones are the smoothest), the difference can be seen only when you apply it in multiple layers to try and build up the color.
Color payoff varies from good to great over these five shades, some are more opaque than others. Getting the level of intensity you desire is a piece of cake, however, which is why you’ll definitely fall in love with these Maybelline Color Tattoos.
With cream eye shadows, I use a synthetic brush to achieve faster and a better distribution. Alternatively, you can use your fingers, which I also use when I’m in a hurry. It’s a great product to have when you leave for work in the morning and you only have a few minutes to apply your makeup.
You can also apply the Maybelline Color Tattoos with brushes with natural bristles, however these don’t pick up as much product and you’ll end up spending more time than you have to. Moreover, you’ll have a hell of a time cleaning your natural bristle brushes of this waterproof formula..
Each shade comes in a glass pot similar to MAC’s Paintpots, with a black screw cap. It feels hefty and reliable, it protects the product (which in no case dries up as fast as MUFE’s Cream Eye Shadows), however the jar is not so travel-friendly. Each of the Color Tattoos has 4g of product, which will last you a very long time.
What I really love about this range is the long lasting formula and the fact that they can be used as base/primer for powder eye shadows. I use them on my clients for evening and party looks and they perform admirably. Give them a try and tell me which one is your favorite Maybelline Color Tattoo!
