Long hairstyles naturally help lengthen round faces, by optically elongating the shape of your face and adding definition to cheek bones and jaw line. While this means long hair frames the face and creates a narrower appearance, it also implies that the hairstyles that compliment your features must have a slimming effect , be fuller at the crown and layered close to your face.

Long hairstyles can be one of the convenient choices for those who have round faces, the only condition to look fabulous is that you choose the most suitable styles depending on the particularities of your face shape, the features you want to emphasize and the ones you want to downplay.

For instance if adding layers or tapered ends will help to soften the face and add distincion, a choppy long hairstyle will work best if you who have fuller cheeks. Long, side swept bangs are recommended for rouder, proeminent foreheads, while soft wavy layers add definition to cheekbones and chin.

Acknowledging the particularities of your face shape will lead to more options in hairstyles and haircuts, as well as compliment your features. You’ll be surprised at how much difference this can make to your style!

Round faces are among the easiest face shapes to recognize due their fairly obvious characteristics. The round face shape is characterized by the fact that the length and the width of the face is similar if not almost identical and the angles tend to be soft, youthful and inviting.

If the widest part of your face runs across your cheeks and your features are soft without super-defined angles, then there’s no question about it, you’ve got a round face.

Round faces have a variety of options when it comes to long hairstyles, as these looks tend to minimize the width of the face, making it look more oval. Although medium hairstyles are seen as a perfectly viable choice for styling and balancing facial features, long hairstyles offer the maximum face slimming effect and are therefore considered perfect for round faces.

Let me tell you more about cuts, styles and looks that will compliment your features, making your face look more oval.

Long Haircuts for round faces

Long hair tends to look best on round faces, as it elongates and slims the features. Long layers and waves are the best option because they take away attention from your cheeks and  compliment your face shape.

If you want to go for a layered hairstyles, you should try to make sure that your layers fall beneath your chin or even lower. If you go with shorter layers, they will only add body to your hair and draw attention to the roundness of the face, instead of elongating it like they should. If you are wondering what type of layers you could opt for, then you should know that soft wispy layers as well as shaggy layers, like those worn by Alexa Chung are considered the ideal ones for this face shape.

You may also want to keep some layers in play because  this long hair can look a little too severe when it’s all one length, and it may also just lie flat against your head and accentuate your wider cheek areas.

Cutting in layers higher than your earlobe may cause your tresses to flare out around your jawline, where they’ll widen your face. For this reason, layers should be subtle and begin a few inches below your cheekbones for the most flattering effect.

If you want a long hairstyle and you hair is prone to a wave or curl, avoid at all costs ending up with a rounded ‘bubble cut’. Choose choppy layers through the back and the bottom of your hair to give it shape and a flirty vibe.

If you have straight hair, the golden rule is to find an option that fall onto your face and lenghtens it, making it appear slimmer and your cheekbones more structured. You will find a choppy long hairstyle a great look, especially if you also have thin hair like I do and need some extra volume at the crown.

Contrary to what some say, properly cut and styled bangs are a great addition to long hairstyles, as long as they aren’t too blunt or full because that will make your face seem shorter and wider.

Longer bangs, swept off to the side or choppy, wispy bangs can work with long hair to slim out your face shape, add balance to your layered long hairstyle and look amazing on round faces. A long wispy fringe will look gorgeous and suit fine hair, whereas thicker hair will be more complimented by a longer side swept fringe, that will lengthen your face.

The best long haircuts for round faces add volume naturally, but if you have fine hair, that might not be enough for you. You can create even more fullness at the crown by using styling products and the proper techniques to create hairstyles suited for every occasion or personality.

Use volumizing shampoos and conditioners when washing hair to boost your natural volume and don’t neglect hair treatments for damaged hair if you style your hair extensively to give it bounce.

Wavy long hairstyle

Because long hair tends to look flat without any help from styling tools, I always blow dry hair with a round brush, lifting tresses from the scalp. This adds volume to the crown and creates waves naturally, that follow the shape of your features and highlights you cheekbones.

Gentle waves deflect the roundness of the face, so if you have natural wave in your hair allow your hair to fall naturally. If not, use a Sea Salt Spray or a large barrel curling iron to give it the desired texture.

Straight Long Hairstyle

Super straight hair also looks great if you want to go with a long hairstyle. Use a straightening iron to achieve the desired effect and spray some shining serum close to the crown to add shine and further elongate the face. A gorgeous look for long, straight hair is a center part, that contrary to the sayings, looks great with long hairstyles, just isn’t recommended for shorter hair, as it accentuates a round face.

Hair Pouf Hairstyle

Wheather kept loose or secured in an updo, a hair pouf style focuses the volume on top of your head, making it a really ideal style to elongate a round face.  To acieve this look tease over a section of hair on top of your head, from temple to temple, in order to give it some volume and height. Side swept Long Hair

A chic side swept style does a lot more for your round shape than make you look fun and flirty, as if that weren’t a good enough reason to try it. Side swept long bangs elongate your face by creating a dynamic angle and a flattering arc on your face, drawing attention away from your round face.

To create this look, blow-dry your bangs and shorter layers with a round brush and use a hairspray to hold your tresses into place. These locks have an even greater visual effect if you try styling trick called highlights, but more on that later.

Tousled Messy Layered Hairstyle

To elongate a round face, build up a lot of volume around the top section of your hair. This elongates your face and make it appear more oval. This style works best on long to medium-length hair, as it brings a modern, 90s appeal and a sexy vibe. You’re going for an effortless, roughed-up look, so in order to achieve it, take random sections of hair and apply some dry hair wax. You’ll get that bed head look that instantly turns heads!

Elegant Long Hairstyles

If you’re looking for an elegant long hairstyle to suit a round face, you won’t come across any pulled back, rigid styles. Instead of going for chiseled, refined hairdo that does no longer fit in today’s world, opt for messier styles that let a few tendrils escape to frame your face and create vertical length.

A low and loose chignon bun is a perfect option, as well as a retro, voluminous faux long bob hairstyle. Adele’s hairstyle has a balancing effect, as the fullest part of a round face is at the cheeks, so keeping the weight at the ends of strands enhances angles along the jaw line. It has a gorgeous retro feel, but is also very modern and fresh.

Curly Long Hairstyles

Romantic curls piled into a soft bun are a favorite option for formal occasions, as long as you opt for soft curls, that aren’t too defined. There are a variety of styles for long hair, that can be achieved with soft, loose curls, either wrapped, twisted and tucked into any romantic hairstyle.

Parting your hairstyle

An easy and effective way to balance your facial features without turning to complicated hair styling techniques is to change your part. I believe that a middle part can make the face appear longer and slimmer effortlessly, so don’t be afraid to experiment and see how you like it.

Women with round faces may also benefit from dramatic side parts, as the dynamical direction elongates the face and camouflages fuller cheeks. Turn to these options whenever you don’t have time to turn to other styling tricks to create an equilibrium between your features.

In ancient civilizations, women’s hair was often elaborately and carefully dressed in special ways. Women coloured their hair, curled it, and pinned it up in a variety of ways. They set their hair in waves and curls using wet clay, which they dried in the sun and then combed out, or else by using a jelly made of quince seeds soaked in water, or curling tongs and curling irons of various kinds.

  2. Thanks for the comment! I’m fascinated by the beauty techniques used in ancient times, especially in Egypt :)

I’m a male with a round face. I prefer long hair at least shoulder length. I don’t mind the messy look. My hair is sort of wavy but when it grows out it gets more flat on the crown. Since I’m need of a trim desparetely, what do I need my hair stylist to do so my hair continued to grow out without taking away the length it already has per se? The crown is very flat. My sides are growing out and ‘flipping out’ because my hair has waves. I sort of like that look on the sides but the since my length in the back isn’t that long the ‘flip’ on the sides makes my face look wider. Any suggestion to maintain my hair growing out with a round face?

  4. Hi Marc,

If you don’t want your hair to look flat on the crown, you should ask your stylist to cut it in layers. Because you have a round face the shortest should not be above the ear lobe, so until you grow your hair longer, you’ll have to deal with those flips your hair texture is inclined to do.

The process of growing out your hair will take some time, but once your shortest layer will reach your ear lobe or your jaw bone, you’ll be one handsome guy with a flattering cut.

    Good luck and patience!
