Fall / Winter Makeup Trends by M.A.C

As I turn my attention to the backstage photos from the four Fashion Weeks from New York to Paris, it’s clear to me that the makeup trends for the fall/winter will definitely come off to most women as striking and memorable, yet casual and easy to adapt regardless of your makeup know how.

As you’re about to see from the fall/winter trend forecast presented by M.A.C, this season contrasts to last fall’s glamorous, haute-couture vixen look and embraces a more casual approach to luxury and elegance.

Makeup is finally regarded as an accessible means to highlight not just your features, but also your personality and attitude.

Gone are the graphical, chiseled looks that take up too much time and require constant touch ups. This fall season we’ll be putting aside our bulge-free lip liners and our blending brushes and replace them with some handy Q-tips and hazy touches in the eye and lip makeup.

Ethereal metallic eye shadows, grunge smoky eyes, vibrant, matte lips or electric, futurist pearly highlights are just some of the major beauty elements that we’ll be sporting in the season to come.

Everything is a bit smudged or messy, tousled and turned in a sort of nonchalance that has become characteristic to us and our lifestyle.

Effortless beauty is the main trend in the fall/winter season and as I’m sure you’ll come to agree by the end of this post, most women will find a favorite look among the four directions proposed by M.A.C. – Reb-elle, Au-Currant, Perspex-tive & Spiritual-eye.

Reb-elle

- smoky eyes | nude lips | flawless skin

The Reb-elle makeup look takes its inspiration from gothic and grunge 90s makeup. Make no mistake, however, in believing this trend is ostentatious. Designers like Phillip Lim, Roberto Cavalli, Donna Karan, Rodarte or Marc Jacobs envisioned the modern smoky eye as the perfect choice for “a very cool, fun girl and very underground, but still sophisticated” as Francois Nars explains.

FW13 Trend: Smoky Eye

FW13 Trend: Smoky Eye

The star look of the Reb-elle girl is a sexy, messy smoky eye paired with a flawless complexion, perfectly sculpted cheeks and neutral colored lips. The contrast between the rough, edgy eye makeup and the polished, impeccable skin is what makes this trend work so well, so make sure you prep and prime your skin to perfection before you go for “The Morning After” Makeup Look.

FW13 Trend: Smudged Makeup

Match the intense black with metallic blue or silver for a cool modern-day gothic smoky eye like Donna Karan or Aminaka Wilmont chose for their presentations or add some gold pigment and give your makeup a glam touch, like we’ve seen in the Francesco Scognamiglio fashion show.

FW13 Trend: Cat Eye

Another Reb-elle micro-trend is also the cat eye makeup that we’ve seen in the Mosquino, The Blonds, Monique Lhuillier and Sister Sibling fashion shows. They all feature distinct takes on the traditional cat eye look and pair them with a natural, flawless complexion and a nude or a discreet rosy nude lip color.

Spiritual-eye

- metallic eye shadows | glossy complexion

Completely opposite to the dark eye make-up featured in Reb-elle is the second M.A.C Makeup Trend of the season, Spiritual-eye. The look combines cool tones, ethereal shades with a glossy, porcelain complexion.

FW13 Trend: Soft Ethereal Eye Shadow

Earthy tones made a big statement on the eyes, shades of burgundy and copper created a gorgeous, rich, textured look at J. Mendel, Gucci, Tom Ford, Altuzarra and Versace. Copper is a fresh and glamorous take on gold, and it blends with an autumnal palette.

FW13 Trend: Cooper Eye Shadow

The Spiritual-eye trend is influenced by this season’s fashion interpretations of fantasy stories, mysterious tales and romantic, luxurious natural environments. As capes and cloaks in opulent textures and grand silhouettes cast a spell on the fall/winter season, so does the make-up worn by the models on the catwalks.

Au-Currant

strong lip | soft blush | minimal eye makeup

While Reb-elle draws focus on the eyes, Au-Currant emphasizes the lips and keeps the eye makeup to a minimum, while adding just a soft hint of blush. Vibrant, matte shades of red, purple, coral or raspberry were trending throughout all four Fashion Weeks, in Ohne Titel, Badgley Mischka, Oscar de la Renta, Fendi, Antonio Marras, Marni, Rachel Zoe and Sally LaPointe shows.

FW13 Trend: Purple Lipstick

The fascinating purple lips were introduced during the lineup of Fendi and Antonio Marras. They caught the attention immediately during Milan Fashion Week and became a trend ever since.

The bold, red lips seem to be am impartible element of any fashion week show, as they were seen at Ohne Titel and Badgley Mischka, Emporio Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, Roccobaroco and Bottega Veneta fashion shows.

FW13 Trends: Strong Lip

The Au-Currant trend puts lips in the spotlight by choosing rich, vibrant shades; however the techniques to apply them vary and naturally, so does the finished look.

The bitten, stained lip look were a distant memory of last fall’s ultra precise, vampy lip. To get the look “You want a blown rose effect. The edges should be soft, which makes your mouth look bigger. Go dark in the middle and fan out” as Lucia Pieroni for Vera Wang points out.

FW13 Trend: Stained Lips

FW13 Trend: Stained Lips

Blend the edges of the lipstick using a Q-tip to blur the line a bit imperfectly, as the makeup team behind Marni did. You can do this look matte or glossy, according to your preference.

If the dimensional lip stain look isn’t to your liking, then you’ll probably adore the matte vibrant lips also showcased on the runway. Contrary to the bitten lip look were the bright, but flat lips that will surely turn heads and steal hearts.

FW13 Trend: Pigment on Lips

FW13 Trend: Pigment on Lips

To get the look, you need a lip liner and lipstick in a bright color, preferably a vibrant coral or a raspberry shade on top of which you gently pat some M.A.C pigment in the same shade. The result, as you can see from the pictures here, is simply gorgeous!

Perspex-tive

- highlighter | glossy finish | bright eyeliner

The last M.A.C trend, Perspex-tive, highlighted literally the complexion and the bone structure, emphasizing the cheeks and brow bones. While some designers (Bottega Veneta) selected models with natural sculpted cheekbones, hence providing the trend with the help of natural beauty, others used highlighters and the contouring technique to emphasize this area.

FW13 Trend: Highlighted cheeks

Angelo Marani and Pascal Millet used soft pink to underline the cheekbones, while Giambattista Valli, Chloe, Issey Miyake, Mugler and Max Mara opted for a more striking, Shine On highlighter approach.

FW13 Trend: Dewy skin

FW13 Trend: Dewy skin

Complexion is given a dewy, glowing shine and eye makeup is kept to a minimum. This natural and almost romantic makeup can be accomplished easily, by applying a neutral, bright eye shadow or a metallic neutral on the lid all the way up to the eyebrows and by adding a highlighter on the inner corners of the eyes.

FW13 Trend: Minimal Eye Makeup

A micro-trend that I also came across while going through the backstage photos is the innovative and extremely cool bright eyeliner. Seen on the Hakaan, Vanessa Bruno, Issey Miyake and Jitrois fashion shows, these subtle and beautiful touches will definitely be some of the elements I will choose to implement in my makeup for the upcoming fall/winter season.

Finish off the look with lashings of mascara, a hint of peachy blush on the cheeks and a nude or bright coral shade on the lips.

There you have them! The M.A.C Trend Forecast I interpreted for you should give you a proper idea of what elements to expect for in the following fall/winter season. Let me know which one of the trends mentioned above you like best in the comment section!
